I own the 56 APD and the 90. I just got the Viltrox 75 today. So far it’s OK, for a third party lens. But it’s no Fuji-killer. The AF is substantially slower than either the 56 or 90. But much more problematic is something’s not quite working well with the lens/body communication. Maybe I have a faulty copy, but on my X-S10 (I haven’t put it on the more expensive cameras I have — I’m cautious, don’t want to fry a costly body) it’s not performing well in multiple ways. The most obvious is something’s wrong with aperture control. Every time I focus it’s flipping the aperture open and closed in multiple, quite slow, steps. It’s like it goes through 4-5 different aperture stops, one at a time, and each time the camera adjusts and the viewfinder briefly flashes bright white. The only other time I’ve seen this happen is with other third-party products that have likewise reverse engineered the mount protocol — a Metabones smart Canon EF adapter comes to mind.
Also, the lens’s AF/MF switch has very odd behavior. If you set it to MF, nothing happens, it won’t MF with the focus ring. And if the body was set to AF and the switch is on MF, the focus setting can’t be changed from the body — the Q menu still shows AF but it’s not changeable. I had to set the lens back to AF, then set the body to MF and then set the lens to MF. Then I could MF with the ring.
Hopefully these problems can be solved with a firmware fix, but just to say, all’s not perfect and Pro, and certainly the AF speed is far less than Viltrox’s claims. Their website says “features advanced autofocus performance” and I’m here to say that is an exageration.
I actually don’t have many third-party AF lenses; for third-party I mostly stick to all-mechanical lenses and this is why.
On the plus side, I was pleasantly surprised with optical performance at a distance. I test new lenses for decentering by setting everything to manual, focusing on something with fine detail far away dead center, and then without changing anything, moving the camera so that object is in the extreme corners and taking four shots of the same object. Then I crop that object out of all five photos and collage them together. It gives an excellent idea of how even the performance is across the field. If you haven’t done this, give it a try, the lenses you think are nearly-perfect might surprise you… anyway by doing this I discovered that there’s slightly more of a bluish cast at the top of my copy, but the sharpness was equal in the corners and center — wide open. From all the reviews, I’d expected substantially less sharpness at the edges, but at least at a distance, I’m not seeing that. Of course it could be very dependent on distance, and my guess is there’s likely strong field curvature when focused close, which is where most “charts and pixel peeping” reviewers do their test shots — you know, bookshelves at 3 meters, that kind of thing. Anyway, at ~1km, my copy has a very flat focal plane and extremely good sharpness into the corners, which is equal to the center. Your copy may be different. But this beats some of the much more expensive Fuji lenses I have.
If the AF/aperture bug can be solved it’ll be a keeper.
Which lens do you like best?
Personally I will share my 3 fav lenses in this 7 lenses shoot-out. They are not in any order but these lenses speak to me and my style of shooting. First is XF35mm F1.4 R. I like this lens because of how it renders. It’s also the noisiest and doesn’t have WR. At F1.4 this is lens is pretty fast and also rather small. AF is slow but when paired with newer camera; one could feel the improvement. The next lens is TTartisan 35mm F1.4. At USD $79, this lens commands great value. Also a F1.4 lens but a manual lens. Optical at F1.4 it’s not the sharpest but very useable. This lens is tiny. The last lens is Voigtlander 35mm f2 macro Apo-Ultron. The downside for this lens is it price. It’s sharp at wide open. Very well built. Focusing is buttery smooth. I like the character of this lens; on par with XF35mm F1.4. I hope you find this little shoot-out useful.
